7/8 Math Grading Policies

Homework Policy

Homework is a very important part of a math class. Once a concept is understood, it sometimes takes quite a bit of practice to fully master it. We will spend a good part of class each day doing examples, but it is important for the students to be able to solve the problems independently and accurately. Therefore, your child will most likely have math homework at least 4 days a week. Homework will be a significant part of their grade, so it is imperative that they complete their homework every night. Each day, we will spend the first part of class correcting homework and answering any questions the children might have.

How Homework Will be Graded

Homework will be graded on completion or accuracy.

  •             Completion (C): Normally, homework, when given on the first day of the lesson will be graded on completion. That means if the students have the homework completed on the day it is due, and have shown their work, they will receive all the points for that assignment. If only a portion is finished, then the students will receive a portion of the points. If the material was frustrating for the child, evidence that they attempted the problems or a note from a parent will allow him or her an extra day to complete the assignment without penalty.
  •             Accuracy (A): If we spend more than one day on a lesson, then the 2nd day of homework will be graded on accuracy. That means, after we check the answers, the points the students will receive is determined by how many they answered correctly.
  •             Homework will usually be worth 5 points.

Late homework

      • if turned in within a week, highest grade possible is a C - 80%
      • if turned in after one week, highest grade possible is a D - 70%

**This policy does not apply to students who have been absent from class.**

Tests and Quizzes

  •             Each chapter will include at least one quiz. Quizzes are worth between 25-40 points.
  •             Each chapter will conclude with a type of assessment.  Tests and projects will be worth 75-100 points.
  •             Tests will be sent home to be signed and returned. I believe it is important for you, as parents, to see how your child is performing on the tests.

Projects

  •             Projects will be determined as the year progresses.

 ***Grades on TeacherEase***

It is important that homework is turned in when due and if late, then within a short period of time from the due date. Math homework is more effective if completed while we are still working on the specific concept. I realize that an accurate grade is not presented until I enter grades for  all assignments. To help the students stay on top of their homework, when I enter grades in TeacherEase, I will be entering a zero for any missing assignment. This even includes missing assignments due to absences. I want this to be a tool for you and your child to be aware of any work that still needs to be turned in. I will put comments in the grade book letting you know that the assignment needs to be turned in. Let me stress, it is not a permanent zero. When the assignment is turned in, I will re-enter the grade. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.
