Due:
Students will need to read the poem "O Captain, My Captain" published in 1865 by Walt Whitman and then research the extended metaphor used in this poem. Students should look for what comparison is being made here. The are three extended metaphors in this poem, so you will need to explain what each comparison is. Included on this assignment is a video lesson over what extended metaphor is, a reading of the poem, and a hint to part of the three metaphors. If there are any questions please do not hesitate to ask. I will have a zoom meeting today at 2:30 pm as well today if you'd like to ask any questions then as well.
Due:
Students need to watch the video lesson, the video includes a reading of the poem, a literal breakdown of the poems meaning, it touches on extended metaphor again, irony, and most importantly it explains what the literary device personification is. It also details what you need to do in order to complete the assignment. So it is vital that you at least watch the video all the way through at least once. along with the video lesson, I will include a PDF copy of the poem so you can read it again if you need to. (please note that the PDF is from CommonLit and includes questions at the bottom, you do NOT need to worry about responding to the questions on the PDF, they are NOT part of the assignment)
Due:

Do you agree with this description? If so, describe someone in our life you think is a good example of this. If not, describe what you think is a true American hero and describe at least one example of your description.

Students will need to fill out all the components of the plot chart using information from the novel Watsons Go to Birmingham-1963.
This can be done a few different ways. Students may...
A) Print out the attached plot chart and fill in the boxes. take a picture of it, then email to yourself, and then submit it to google classroom.
B) draw their own plot chart and fill in the different sections. take a picture of this, email it to yourself, and then submit the image to google classroom.
C) Make a google doc, and then type out your responses to each section of the plot chart (make sure to include labels for each section if you choose this option). Then submit the google doc on google classroom.
Fill out each section as best as you can. Remember that the rising action is going to be the action that takes place before the climax. The climax is going to be towards the end of the book and is going to be the most tense and suspenseful part of the story. it is usually right before the major conflict in this story is resolved. I'll give you all this tip: the main conflict of this novel, would be the Watson family trying to change Byron's negative behavior. so with that in mind, consider where we see the most change in Byron and you'll know when the climax is.
Don't get to worried about absolute correct answers, remember that some of the answers here will vary. as long as you don't think leaving for Birmingham is the climax- because trust me, it isn't :)
