Music Curriculum Goals
Philosophy
Every child has God-given talents and gifts. Every child has a capacity to create and to appreciate the creativity of others. The music curriculum is designed to help our students develop those capacities and abilities.
Music is an important part of our society and of any school curriculum. It is a part of the aesthetic and intellectual growth of each individual.
Music is also part of our spiritual growth. Them music in the liturgy is very important to the celebration of faith and announcing the Good News.
Curriculum Goals of Vocal Music Curriculum K-5 Archdiocese Goals.
Students will:
- Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the use of the elements of music.
- Use musical vocabulary and notation in responding to, creating and performing music.
- Apply knowledge and skill of music through improvisation and compositional interpretation/performances.
- Sing with appropriate techniques and expression alone and with others.
- Show an appreciation for and recognize different styles of music.
- Make judgments based on critical listening and analysis.
- Respond to music aesthetically, intellectually and emotionally.
- Read, listen, and describe music as it relates to history and culture.
4th Grade Music Curriculum
Goals
New Rhythmic Learning:
- Sixteenth notes written as four even sounds on one beat.
- Two sixteenth notes followed by one eighth note; one eighth note foloowed by two sixteenth notes; a dotted quarter note followed by an eighth note.
- Syncopation, written as eight note – quarter not – eighth note.
- Six-eight meter; three-four meter, and the dotted half note.
New Melodic Learning:
- Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti Do and hand signs
- Whole steps, half steps in scale pattern
- Absolute note names on staff for C & G & F Scales
- Key signatures for C, F, G
Recorder:
- Learn how to hold & blow
- Learn notes B – A - G – E - D
Singing:
- Unison, in canon, in two parts with attention to appropriate vocal technique and expression.
5th Grade Music Curriculum
Goals:
New rhythm and meter learning
1 Cut time
New melody, Theory, and harmony learning
1 Intervals
2 Chords I,
3 Major, Minor scales
