Art Curriculum, K-8

 

School Goals

Students will:

·       Appreciate various artists throughout history and be able to create works using the artist’s style.

·       Identify all the Elements of Art and be able to implement correct uses for each element.

·       Identify all of the Principles of Art and be able to implement correct uses for each principle.

·       Have a strong generalized ability to produce various works of art in many different mediums.


 

Kindergarten Art Curriculum

Students will:

·       Identify and use primary colors

·       Identify and use shapes

·       Identify and use patterns

·       Uses correct control of paint and paint brush

·       Demonstrate use of scissors and glue

·       Demonstrates correct control of drawing materials

·       Show knowledge of clay manipulation

 

 

Content

·       Primary colors through painting

·       Shapes through tracing, cutting, and gluing

·       Patterns through shape and color placement

·       Acrylic and watercolor paints

·       Cutting and gluing

·       Crayon drawing, pencil drawings, marker drawings

·       Clay cubes and simple clay shapes


 

First Grade Art Curriculum

Students will:

·       Recall types of art from American artist

·       Identify and use secondary colors

·       Identify and use shapes in design

·       Identify and use patterns in design

·       Identify texture through simple texture rubs

·       Identify value through monochromatic art

·       Identify the concept of middle or center

·       Create an alternating pattern

 

 

Content

·       Colorful shapes, using secondary colors where the primary colors meet.

·       Drawing and painting pictures using shapes to form objects

·       Colors and designs to form a pattern

·       Outdoor pictures using texture rubs

·       Pictures using variation in crayon pressure

·       Room designs with horizontal lines to mark distance

·       Modern realistic scenes with variations in patterns


 

Second Grade Art Curriculum

Students will:

·       Identify works of art from the United States.

·       Use and identify geometric shapes, spheres, cubes, cylinders, and cones.

·       Create a complex pattern

·       Identify and use actual texture

·       Use foreground and background to illustrate space

·       Identify and use light and dark value

·       Create a complex pattern

 

 

Content

·       Colors used by American Artists

·       Basic origami techniques to teach geometric shapes

·       Complex patterns using artists such as Klimt

·       Texture through sculpture

·       Foreground and background through design manipulation- size and shades

·       Value monochromatic art work


 

3rd grade Art Curriculum

Students will:

·       Identify works of art from United States

·       Recognize different types of media used in artwork

·       Identify and use symmetrical balance

·       Identify and use warm and cool colors

·       Create still life from observation

·       Create cityscape

·       Demonstrate a proficiency in painting technique

·       Construct sculpture from clay or other material

 

 

Content

·       Grandma Moses – American artist

·       Symmetrical 3D ornaments

·       Color grid in warm/cool colors

·       Fall still life of pumpkins, leaves and gourds

·       Watercolor cityscape

·       Paper mache penguins


 

4th grade Art Curriculum

Students will:

·       Identify abstract works of art

·       Illustrate art work that reflects Missouri history

·       Identify and create center of interest

·       Create facial features in correct proportion

·       Identify and use placement and change in detail to create illusion of space

·       Create seascape

·       Apply watercolor paint by using wet on wet technique

·       Create fiber weaving by using a simple loom

 

 

Content

·       Joseph Stella – “Brooklyn Bridge” painting, focal point

·       Missouri stamp

·       Radial design using A/B pattern

·       Self portrait - step by step through proportion

·       Underwater scene

·       Fall leaves using wet-on-wet technique with oil pastels

·       Straws as weaving loom


 

5th grade Art Curriculum

Students will:

·       Identify various cultural art and art throughout history

·       Identify and use contour lines

·       Identify the arrangements of colors on the color wheel

·       Use one point perspective to create the illusion of depth

·       Identify and use monochromatic color

·       Create portrait from observation

·       Create still life from observation

·       Demonstrate printmaking process

·       Create paper mache sculpture

 

 

Content

·       Contour shoe drawing-sharpie & colored pencil

·       Mix color wheel by starting with 3 primary colors

·       Draw room using 1 point perspective

·       Monochromatic painting

·       Classmate portrait

·       Thanksgiving still life - oil pastels

·       Styrofoam print making

·       Paper mache masks


 

6th grade Art Curriculum

Students will:

·       Identify various artists, periods and styles

·       Identify and demonstrate color value – tints and shades

·       Identify the type of art work (e.g., painting, drawing, sculpture, print)

·       Students will create two and three dimensional art forms

·       Create realistic and abstract portraits

·       Manipulate fibers (threading needles, weaving)

 

 

Content

·       Botticelli – Renaissance period, Monet – Impressionism

·       Monochromatic picture using tints and shades of black/white

·       Shoe into piece of art – 3D design

·       Weave burlap-take out pieces of burlap and replace with new yarn


7th grade Art Curriculum

Students will:

·       Identify works from Pop Art, African cultures, Non Objective

·       Identify and use radial balance

·       Identify and use analogous colors

·       Understand the elements in art as they are used in artworks

·       Create original artwork using human figure

·       Demonstrate type of relief block printmaking

·       Create an in-the-round work by joining two or more surfaces using paper mache, plaster craft, cardboard)

 

 

Content

·       Pictures from Pop Art (Andy Warhol, Wayne Thiebaud) with Abstract Art (Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock)

·       Mandalas – radial balance and symmetry

·       “Larger than Life” Claes Oldenburg – 3D design of small object enlarged 4x’s its original size


 

8th grade Art Curriculum

Students will:

·       Identify various styles of art including nonobjective, realism and sculpture

·       Identify and use appropriate scale

·       Identify and use complementary colors

·       Identify and use one point perspective t o create the illusion of space

·       Create original artwork using realistic landscape and abstract

·       Create even continuous and graduated tones using pencil or colored pencil

 

 

Content

·       Non-objective drawing project – blending with colored pencil.  Compare Realism vs. Non-objective

·       Surreal sculpture imitating style of Alberto Giacometti

·       Complementary colors-tints and shades

·       Falling objects in the city – 1 point perspective

·       Realistic landscape
